It is saying difficult things aloud that helps us all, in the end, to be able to say them silently in our heads. Monitor students while they write and "lean in" in order to prompt and guide their thinking. During guided writing instruction, in particular, students are provided with opportunities to experience successful and independent writing within the context of strong teacher support. Several excellent frameworks for writing instruction accomplish these goals, including modeled, shared, interactive, guided or independent writing. Writers nearly always read their work aloud, and this is an important habit to develop with children.
